DATA (2008- present)
Data is an ongoing series. It began as a result of a total, filtered clean out of the studio’s stored prints. It was a careful disintegration of accumulated material, which was processed and categorized, as if ready to return to the archives.
Big prints were fragmented into thousands of tiny strips of paper which were then classified by size, color and texture. Finally, these fragments were regrouped through color and eventually glued onto cardboard and then onto pieces of wood to create geometrical, three-dimensional boxes.
The process of constructing this series is about coping with the unending amount of information streaming into our consciousness. It is about the endless and urgent need to grasp, digest, organize and make sense of this data that overwhelms and confuses us daily.
All the pieces in DATA are contained in wooden boxes which are equally as important as the objects these boxes contain. They are not just frames; they are laboriously handcrafted through endless coats of sanded acrylic paint that end up acquiring a lacquered appearance. Both the container and the content are therefore the result of the struggle with control and the abstract/un-attainable desire for perfection.
